Abstract: Transparent ceramic material is used as gain medium in ceramic laser. Compared with single crystals, transparent ceramics have the advantages of short preparation cycle, low sintering temperature, easy preparation of large size, good optical uniformity under high doping concentration of active ions, and various composite structures can be designed and prepared. In recent years, ceramic lasers have made rapid progress in high power CW and ultra-short pulse laser operation. In this paper, the origin and development of ceramic lasers are reviewed, and the latest development of transparent ceramics in high power, ultra-short pulse laser operation and ceramic laser oscillation with special wavelength are summarized. In addition, the development trends of new laser materials based on the advantages of ceramic preparation has also been described.
